BMAG Sports Personality 1926

As Bradley Wiggins celebrates being voted 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, here’s a sporting success story from the past.

This etching by Percy Smith (1882-1948) in BMAG’s collection shows
record-breaking British athlete Phyllis Green.

Green broke the world high-jump record twice.  In 1925, aged only 17, she jumped 1.524 metres, becoming the first woman to clear five feet.  The following summer she broke her own record, clearing 1.552 metres. She retired from athletics the following year, still only in her teens.

Phyllis Green died in 1999, aged 91. You can find out more about her here.
